Annoyed with all the random popup ads on your Android device? Not sure where the popups are coming from? You are not alone. This one of the most annoying things happening to a lot of Android users. The simple and short answer to why this is happening is because – you have a shady app on your Android device which is causing all this trouble for you. In this guide, we will tell you how you can easily block popup ads on your Android device in no time.

Stop-Popups-Android

Popups are not new. They are all over the internet and even some of the free apps you use have popup ads. But that is something expected. Any “service” comes at a cost and in most cases, the makers of the said free service make money from advertising. That is acceptable to a certain extent. The popup ads we mentioned above only appears when you are using the said app/service and only when you are actively using them. But random popup ads showing up on your Android device which you bought by spending a few hundred bucks (or even more)? Completely, 100%, not acceptable.

The later is the type of ad which is dealing with, in this article. The one that appears in the lockscreen or one that pops up randomly when you are trying to do something important. These kinds of ads are mostly from an app that you have installed on your device. We shall now see how you can identify and clean up your Android to stop all the popup ads on Android.

How to Stop Popup Ads on Android?

When your Android phone is showing apps all over the system UI – it is time to act. It is NOT normal for an Android phone to show ads outside of an app. If you are facing this issue – it is high time you did something about it.

Google constantly takes measures to stop apps from misusing the Ad-supported system on Android. Here’s what they have to say about Ads on Android apps:

“Ads should not be placed in a location that covers up or hides any area that users have interest in viewing during typical interaction. Ads should not be placed in areas where users will randomly click or place their fingers on the screen.”

For my work, part of which is writing for AndroidMore, I constantly install new apps on my Android device to try them out before writing an Android article. And sometimes, I tend to forget to uninstall some of them. This happens for a period of time and then I end up with tons of unused apps on my Android device. All is good until a random popup shows up when I am not doing anything. There are times where I used to see full-screen ads on my lockscreen when I had plugged in my device for charging. This is when I start digging deeper.

Step 1. Identify which app is showing popup ads

Check currently open apps:

Android does not completely close an app just because you pressed the ‘back’ button and came out of it. The apps will still be running in the background. To see what apps are currently running, all you have to do it simply press the recent apps button on your Android (or use the gesture, in case if you are using a modern Android device). Make note of all the apps that are currently open and see if any of them look suspicious to you.

Look for notifications:

Even if you cannot find the app in the “recent” lists, it can still be running in the background. This is possible if the app has a persistent notification. Swipe down your notification shade and look for any notifications that look shady. And if you do find a notification that looks suspicious, simply long press on it to find out which app is sending that particular notification.

Recently installed apps:

  1. Open Google Play Store on your phone.
  2. Go to the ‘My apps and games‘ section.
  3. Tap on the ‘Installed‘ tab.
  4. Sort by ‘Last Used‘ option.

This will show the list of all the apps that have been recently running on your Android device. From here try and find out the app that you feel is suspicious or you don’t remember installing.

Ad Detect Plugin

Ad Detect plugin is one of the best free apps to detect apps that contain ads on your Android device. It is a free app that will identify connections to ad networks from within your apps. You will be able to recognize some of the apps that show in-app ads. You should look for any app that you suspect to display an ad on your home screen.

To make your life easier, you can tap the information button to see what sort of ads are being displayed on a particular app.

Step 2. Uninstall the app showing popup ads

Once you have identified the app which is responsible for showing popup ads on your Android phone, the next step is to get rid of the app. There are two ways to do it.

Method 1: From Phone Settings

  • On your phone, open the ‘Settings‘ app.
  • Scroll down until you see the ‘Apps‘ section. (On some devices, this might have been tucked under another setting; search carefully).
  • You will be shown the list of apps that are installed on your phone. Scroll down until you find the app which you had identified.
  • Tap on the app and on the next screen, tap on ‘Uninstall‘.

Method 2: From Google Play Store

  • Open Google Play Store on your phone.
  • Search for the app which you have identified as responsible for the ads.
  • Tap on the app from the search results shown.
  • Tap on the ‘Uninstall‘ button.

Can’t identify the app?

So, you have done everything to find the app but cannot find it? There is only one solution left now and that factory data reset. Unfortunately, that is the only option left at this point and I highly recommend do it. Because, you do not want malicious apps on your phone.

How to Protect Yourself from Popup Ads on Android?

Here are a few tips that might come in handy:

  1. Never install apps from shady third party sources.
  2. Always prefer Google Play Store for downloading and updating apps.
  3. Do not use “cracked” or “modified” APK files from the internet that claim to provide a paid functionality for free.
  4. Read reviews of a particular app before installing it from Play Store. People always call out poorly behaving apps.
