How to Turn Off Amber Alerts & Emergency Broadcasts on Your Android

by | 17 Jul 2020

In order to be compliant with the FCC Standard, Android has the “Emergency broadcasts” that will make your Android device notify you of any potential threat (or Amber Alert) in your area. One of the notable things about these alerts is that they make a sharp noise even if your device set to silent.

We recommend not to disable all the alerts altogether. While we do have other modes of being notified of any imminent threats, what’s a more efficient way than being notified through the device you always have with you?

If you feel that you don’t need to be notified by your phone of any potential threat in your area, for whatever reason, you can use this guide to completely turn-off Amber Alerts and Emergency Alerts on your device.

Disable All Emergency Alerts on Android

If you use a Samsung phone, you cannot disable all alerts at once. Go to the next section to see how to disable individual types of emergency alerts.

To turn off all the Emergency Alerts and Amber Alerts on your device, follow these steps:

Go to Settings > Apps & notifications > Advanced > Emergency alerts.

Disable the toggle next to “Allow alerts” to turn off all types of emergency broadcast messages. Note: This doesn’t include presidential alerts, which can’t be disabled on any device without root.

Disable Individual Types of Emergency Alerts on Android

If you like to disable only certain types of Emergency Alerts, follow the below steps:

Go to Settings > Apps & notifications > Advanced > Emergency alerts.

Here you would see different types of alerts such as:

  • AMBER Alerts
  • Extreme threats
  • Severe threats
  • Area update broadcasts

You can disable the toggle right next to these alert types to individually disable them.

Disable Emergency Alerts on Samsung Devices

If you are using a Samsung device running Samsung One UI, then these settings are even harder to find.

Go to Messages > Settings > Emergency alert settings > Emergency alerts.

Then disable the toggle switches next to any type of alert you no longer wish to receive.
